Our History

Our History

The New Mount Hebron Baptist Church was founded in October 1984 under the leadership of Rev. W.J. Davis.  With him was a group of 40 followers, inspired by God, who became the foundation of this Church. That was the beginning of a new day with new dreams and aspirations.

A search committee was established to find a place to worship. In less than a week, God led Sis. Laura Johnson to the V.F.W. Post at Miller and Centerville Roads in Garland Texas.

On the next Sunday we held worship service at our new location. Following worship service, the Church met.  At that meeting, Deacon Henry Shaw proposed the name New Mount Hebron Baptist Church. And it was adopted by all.

Various members opened their homes for meetings. Bro. Roosevelt and Sis. Jacqueline (aka, Jackie) Reed arranged for the Senior Choir to rehearse and meet at their home. Furthermore, they opened their home as a meeting place for the Church. Sis. Geraldine Hamilton offered her swimming pool for baptisms.  Sis. Hattie McClary purchased two robes for Rev. W.J. Davis.  A white one for conducting the sacraments and a black one for other occasions.

Momma Jewel Davis suggested forming the Women Day event.  It was established and became the main fund-raising activity for the Church.  Other successful fund-raising drives included selling plate lunches on Sunday and selling church benches. Sis. Helen Bush purchased one of those benches!

As the membership continued to grow, we set our sights on having our own building, but more than a building it would be a church predicated upon the Love of God. In addition to fund-raising activities, members made pledges.

It was during this time that Sis. Jackie Reed, with the support of her husband, Bro. Roosevelt Reed, secured property and sub-divided the land that became the future sight of our new church.

Sis. Jackie Reed spearheaded many activities that were necessary for cultivating a “sense of family” among church members. That sense of family was paramount in making the dream of a new church building a reality!

Finally on July 19, 1987, we entered our new building on 1413 Dairy Road, Garland Texas.

Every building has a cornerstone. Our heavenly cornerstone is Jesus Christ. The cornerstone at the front entrance of our church building reflects strength and courage. Names etched in this Church’s history: Rev. W. J. Davis, Oddis Sneed, and Rev. Leo Davis, Bro. Sam Hill, Bro. Darrell Vinson, Bro. Henry Shaw, and Bro. Roosevelt Reed.

In the succeeding years, the Church continued to be blessed with an ever-increasing membership. It was only a few short years before more space was needed to house the congregation.

In 1998, a second building fund drive resulted in the addition known as the Fellowship Hall.

In 2004, a third building fund drive helped to pay off the mortgage.

In March 2021, Rev. W.J. Davis, pastor of New Mt Hebron Baptist Church since its inception, received his heavenly wings. Then in 2022, Rev. Troy L. Gamble was selected as Pastor.

We have truly come this far by faith and God’s grace.  Our best is yet to come.
